Chip carved toothpick holder

One of my chip carving friends suggested making toothpick holders to chip carve. What a great idea! I produced a number of these and was very happy with the results.

Inexpensive ($4.50) and quick to carve. What a great combination!

Plate is finished

March Madness was a good time for chip carving! I don't have to watch every play and surely not all the commercials so that makes for a good time to relax and make a few chips.
I finished my 14" plate and am very pleased with the results.
I've got two pieces to apply a finish on so that will take place soon.

Next? I have to make some products for others to carve so that's on my to-d0 list now.

Chip Carving - plate progress

Last night I laid out the design for my commemorative plate. The process was to first sketch possible designs on my sketch pad, convert a repeatable border pattern to digital using MSWord and my photo editor, print text to size and shape using Word, transfer most of the pattern to my plate using graphite paper, create a tag board template for the repeatable border, transfer the border using the template. Phew!

Yes, it took me a few hours to do this but careful preparation and design will lead to a great finished piece!
Tonite I should be able to begin the chip carving! Weehaa!

Until next time,
Marty

Weekend Chip Carving

My goal for this weekend: turn a plate, design the chip carving pattern and get started with the carving. For me, it's good to set goals like this as it keeps me motivated.
I'm looking forward to this project as it is for a very special friend of mine.
Next week I'll post an update and progress report.

Spring is coming to Minnesota with temps in the 40's and maybe even 50 next week. Woohoo.

Enjoy your weekend,
Marty

Chip Carving knife sharpening

Today I got a chip carving knife in the mail that a friend wanted me to sharpen. When I felt the edge there was a slight burr on the blade. Email me if you'd like to see a free sharpening video - Marty@MyChipCarving.com
I took this knife and started with the medium ceramic stone to put a 10 degree angle on the blade and turn a burr. The burr was so evident that it peeled off.
Next, I moved to the white ceramic polishing stone. Using this stone I polished the edge to a mirror finish until there was no burr on the edge. It was ready to go!
To check the knife I took out a basswood practice board and carved some chips in a rosette I had laid out. Perfect! Before I was done testing it I'd almost carved a complete rosette.
Having a razor sharp knife is the only way to chip carve.
Bye for now!

Easter weekend

No chip carving for me this weekend. Instead it's a good time for family and remembering what this weekend is truly about.
Next week I'll talk about a commemorative chip carving that I plan to design and carve in the upcoming weeks.

Weekend Chip Carving Completed

I reached my goal last night by finishing the second side of the chip carved napkin holder. I'll post a picture of it as soon as it gets finished and assembled. I'm pleased with the results. I think I'll offer this as a free pattern soon in an upcoming Chip Carving Chat e-letter.

Bye for now,

Chip carving weekend goal

Well, it wasn't until Sunday afternoon during the NCAA tourney announcements but I did carve half of the napkin holder I set out to carve this past weekend. Hopefully I'll chip carve the other side early this week.
It feels good to set a goal and reach it.

Snow on the ground this morning in Minnesota. We shoulda known better than to think spring was coming so soon. :-)

Have a great week,
Marty

What are you chip carving this weekend?

It's Friday and time to plan what to chip carve over the weekend.

I haven't chip carved a napkin holder in quite awhile so that's what I have my sights set on. It's an easy project to make, design, and chip carve. Here's a pic of one I carved a while back -

I either sold it or gave it away so I'm ready to have one on my kitchen table once again.
If you'd like a free pattern for this design, email me: Marty@MyChipCarving.com and I'll send it to you.
How about you? What chip carving plans do you have?
